Interview with TOR Author & Co-Founder of Vault Books, Peter Orullian

Peter, first off I wanted to say thank you for stopping by to chat!

I wanted to let you know that I just recently finished listening to the audiobook version of your epic fantasy novel The Unremembered and as I explained in my review, I really enjoyed it. You had some really unique concepts in your story and your worldbuilding, and even your writing style itself was something new and unique. I’m really looking forward to see how the notes of this story play out.

So you and Steve Diamond have come together to launch a new specialty press called Vault Books, where you will focus on genre fiction to produced limited editions of select titles. Would you like to expand on that?

For now, that’s the focus. Though, we will be doing some original work. In the near term, this will be anthologies. But we’ll surely expand over time.

So you are busy writing your own books, you work full time at Microsoft, and now you are building this specialty press from the ground up. Where did the idea come from?

I’ve actually launched small presses before. Twice. It’s a lot of work, but it’s rewarding. Simply put, Steve and I care about great books. We love the physical artifact. And we want to help fuel the addiction in others.

From the outside looking in over the past couple years, it really seems to me that you are starting to garner recognition for your writing. The reviews you are getting from established, best-selling authors like Sanderson, Hobb, and Hickman is enough to make authors like me turn green with envy. So why is now the right time to start this venture?

Is there ever a right time? It was more a happy accident. Steve and I became friends and got talking about mutual passion points. I shared the kernel of the idea with him, and he said yes. So, off we go.

That's a great point! In the description of Vault Books, there is a particular line that reads, “Our vision is that a Vault Book is a treasured volume.” I love that! What should I expect when I buy my first Vault Book?

Well, the product packaging, as they say, will be top drawer. No question. Quality is foremost. Then, we’ve identified certain brand values we intend always to abide both in materials and content. So, you’ll expect certain extras with the book to bring you closer to the author.

For being a brand new press, you already have an impressive lineup of authors currently including Brandon Sanderson, Dan Wells, Mercedes Yardley, and of course both you and Steve. What was the process that you guys used to create this lineup?

Well, we’re fortunate to know a lot of writers. We’re also fortunate to have no inhibitions about asking folks we know to throw in with us. There’s more in store, as you can imagine.

I know there are contractual hurdles, but are there any additional titles from those authors that you expect to become available through Vault Books?

Wouldn’t you like to know?

Uh, yeah. So, when can I pre-order the 3rd book of the Stormlight Archives? ;)

Ahaha!

Are there any new names that have been secretly added to that list, and are you willing to share them with us?

Yes, and no.

Is there a message that the world should know about Vault Books?

Just please connect with us online so you can stay up to date on some coming announcements we have. We’re on Facebook at: facebook.com/vaultbooks, and on Twitter at @vaultbooks. And we have a website and store at: www.vaultbooks.pub

Where can folks find these sexy limited edition books?

Right now, on our website. In the near future, we’ll federate to other places, I suspect.

Peter, I know you are a busy man with many demands on your time, so I really appreciate you stopping by. I look forward to seeing Vault Books grow!
